More hearts

Well, we all know what today is. I’m not even going to mention it by name. Today is supposed to be a day about love and romance, but I’m finding it hard to get into the spirit when I’ve been bombarded for weeks with emails and advertisements trying to guilt me into showing my love via pricey gifts.

For example, two weeks ago, I got an email from Apple suggesting that I buy iPads for the loves in my life. Because nothing says love and romance quite like expensive consumer electronics.

Y’all, when did Valentine’s Day become a hardcore gift giving occasion a la Christmas?

I’m not totally against the concept of showing love for one’s beloved. Really, I’m not. But since my personal beloved and I started dating in early February way back in the day, we have always preferred to just celebrate that day, rather than the one forced upon everyone nine days later.

But, in the spirit of the day, I do have something to share with you all. Does anyone remember the wall o’ hearts in my kitchen? I’ve been adding to it and amending it a bit, so here’s how it looks as of today:

The big heart is a foam wreath covered in buttons.

So there’s my little contribution to all the hearts abounding today.

Happy February 14th to you all.

Happy February 14th to y’all too. My beloved isn’t much for acknowledging the usual calendar holidays, but he comes up with some lovely gestures at other times, so he’s forgiven….especially since he’s going to be on his knees installing beautiful cherry floors in our living room all weekend! I like to shower my babies with all things heart-shaped and chocolate covered on 02/14 – it’s really a day for them in our house. (No iPads though…seriously? Who does that?!)

I will always remember when I was kid, how my parents got each of us (3 girls) a heart-shaped box of some chocolates. They didn’t celebrate V-Day for themselves, because they preferred to celebrate their anniversary.

I usually try to get Emma something, but Rob and I are really bad about remembering official holidays. Neither of us cares :-)

Yeah, outside of the school parties, this day will be just the other side of a normal day at our house. My husband is not the mushy romantic type. In fact, he called this morning to ask if I’d like to spend my evening at a high school basketball game. *snort* He’ll be announcing/keeping book….I would be on kid duty. I think we’ll stay home and watch the movies I bought my kids for the day (newest Ice Age and Madagascar). (Note: this is the 3rd basketball game we’d be attending this week and there’s another one tomorrow. And a tournament Saturday. I am not a total humbug.) I picked up a few cards on the cheap (thanks for the coupons Target) and have slipped them into a few places where my husband won’t miss them. I also nabbed some lobster tails on a super deal at Safeway this weekend. Along with a Madagascar box of that blue fake cheesy stuff my kids adore. It’s a holiday. What the hell…

  4. Since my last name was Hart, the unofficially family logo has always been a heart. Your charming wall display prompted me to gather up my collection of heart-y things and start planning to hang them. When I get all the hooks attached and get them up on the wall, I’ll share. Thanks for the push to finally do it and by the way, Happy Valentine’s Day (the 14th is not a big deal for me, either.)

  5. Can’t wait to see those hearts in real life;)
the only thing I’ve got today is a bad cough and sinus headache. So it goes…

Oh, I love your wall o’ hearts!

  7. Love all your little hearts. For a couple like you – everyday is a celebration!

I’m always glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t really appreciate the feeling of being force-fed sentiment. I’m thrilled to get flowers, but not a dozen red roses on Valentine’s Day(I mean, I won’t turn them away, of course, but you get the point.)
Anyhow…I’ve been away from the blogosphere for almost 5 years now but look forward to reading you again. Love your stuff!
