I will know the *exact* moment each of my girls reads this post, because I'll be able to hear their squeals over this photo throughout the house.
We’re supposed to get snow again here in Virginia this afternoon. The forecast is for 1-3 inches, which means we could get exactly that or we could get 12 inches or we could get rain.
This forecast also means that people around town are losing their shit, as we southerners do when anything frozen is in the forecast. Give us three straight weeks of 100 degree days in July and life goes on more or less as usual; however, present us with snow or ice and we run around in circles, flapping our hands, and accomplishing nothing.
After that, we all mob the grocery stores and stock up on milk, bread, and toilet paper, even if we already have fridges full of food and enough TP to supply all the bunkers of all the End of World types in Idaho. (With apologies to those people in Idaho who are not preparing for Armageddon. I realize that there are some people in your who do not stockpile guns and MRE’s.)
Today, some school systems are already closed, while others are planning to close early, including my girls’ school. They’ll be home by 12:30, which gives us all afternoon to play. I’ve already told them to be thinking of movies they want to watch. I expect that by 12:45, they’ll be jammified and popping popcorn in anticipation of their movie marathon. I’m thinking today would be perfect for them to watch the three original Star Wars movies back-to-back.
While the girls are getting their ewok love on, I plan to do some work, then hunker down on the sofa with a good book. I have a few dozen to read, plus I just got an email from the library that the copy of Gone Girl I reserved is waiting for me. And Pete is planning to pick up pizzas on his way home from work.
In the comments, I’d love for you to tell me what movie you’d watch today, what book you would read, and what tasty snacks you’d have on hand.

`
Hmmm, if it were a snow day here and I didn’t have work to do, I would finish reading ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, which I am halfway through, and loving. I read ‘Gone Girl’ last week. Very tense and twisty. As for movies, I would probably watch “In the Electric Mist” which I bought in the $5 bin a couple of years ago, but have yet to watch. It’s based on one of my favourite Dave Robicheaux books (written by James Lee Burke) and stars Tommy Lee Jones, whom I always picture as Dave when I read the books. I guess I’m afraid I won’t like it, which is why I haven’t watched it yet.
I Loved “Gone Girl” and couldn’t put it down…I would curl up with the new Kate Morton book “The Secret Keeper” loaded and ready to read on my Kobo. Movie wise, I have “The Decendants” and “Water for Elephants” lingering on my PVR waiting for a chance to watch them.
Oh I would LOVE a snow day! I’m so loving how you guys plan on making the most of this early start to your weekend. Awesomesauce!
I read Gone Girl last weekend. Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.
Just started The Fault in Our Stars this morning and I seriously considered just staying on the train this morning and reading instead of getting off at my stop for work. This is the first book I’m reading on my Nook (which I bought for myself as my “yay, I got a new job” gift back in May. I did read part of Little Women when I first brought the Nook home & played around with it, but I don’t think that counts.). I downloaded it last night but was too tired to really start it. So. I’m not completely sold on this whole e-reader thing just yet, but I have to admit it’s much easier reading on the Nook while standing on the subway/walking across the street, etc. than it is reading a book.
Thanks to my underemployment, Fridays are my days off and since I’m sort of in your neighborhood, I’m facing the same weather forecast. I’ll be hunkering down with some bill paying, cleaning/organizing and then a “Call the Midwife” marathon session. I’m thinking my temporary-crowned tooth would like some cheese fondue for a snack to go with that.
We were supposed to get 1-3 inches last night, and ended up with less than 1″. Although they are out plowing the streets, I think because those poor plow drivers are suffering withdrawal symptoms from our lack of snow.
We have a P/T conference this morning, then we’re going to lunch, and then we have to stop by the bank for another meeting about our refinancing. Our appraisal came out lower than the tax assessment, so the banker wants us to consider something different from paying PMI. Either way we’ll refinance because we’ll be cutting our interest rate in half, but it’s a pain.
I would love to watch the LOTRs movies, but Emma is prone to nightmares, so we can’t watch them with her, which pretty much means we can’t watch them until she goes to college
I would love to curl up on your couch and enjoy the Star Wars movies with your girls.
I would LOVE a snow day today. I’m at work and the heat is not (working that is) so it was 49 degrees inside when I got here. I did have a bit of a snow day yesterday since my son was home with the flu but definitely on the mend and I had the day off. We played games – Pathfinder, Connect Four and Blink.
What a coincidence! Gone Girl is also waiting for me at the library, along with a few others.
My elder kid is in college down south where it will be 55 degrees today with no chance of snow.
Although her school has already closed, my younger kid is at school preparing for a Big Swim Meet this afternoon. Schools around here are closing like dominoes, but I suspect the Big Swim Meet will never close. The bad news is that at 7pm, I will have to go get her. The good news is that I might see the famous Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky doing what she does best.
I’m not a big movie watcher, but I should warn you that the first of the original Star Wars movies starts with a lot of shooting. That caused my girls to turn it off and not want to watch any more.
For books, I just started reading a YA book: Falling For You by Lisa Schroeder. I enjoyed Gone Girl.
I forgot about the snacks. Last night, younger kid baked chocolate chip cookies and brownies. We boxed up and mailed half of each to her sister. The rest are here with me, so I’m all set.
The one and only time I ever miss being a teacher is when there are snow days. I don’t get snow days here in the real full-time working world, and I’m rather jealous that when my kidlet starts school (in oh just 5 years), my work-at-home husband is likely to be the one who gets to enjoy snow days with her. *pout* If I DID get to have a snow day today, however, I would like to snuggle down with LET’S PRETEND THIS NEVER HAPPENED from Jenny Lawson (AKA the Bloggess), which I just bought for cheapsies on my Nook a few weeks ago when they had it on cheap-o special and haven’t had a chance to start yet. And I’d snuggle down with hot chocolate and kettle corn for snacks. Maybe dig out a movie we own that we haven’t watched in a million years and see if we still like it enough to own it.
Oh, and I recently read GONE GIRL too and enjoyed it tremendously, though I still like Gillian Flynn’s first book, SHARP OBJECTS, better than any of her subsequent books. But GONE GIRL is about some deliciously fucked up people (if you’ll pardon my French, but I think you’ll agree when you finish the book that is the only fair way to describe them) and has good, keep-you-guessing, slowly building suspense.
I realized there is NO food in my house. I think we will spend the evening gnawing on unsweetened chocolate. I will finish watching The Help, which I started last night.
What? Watching movies during a snowfall? My poor kids are so desperate for snow, they run outside in full sledding gear the minute the first flake arrives. Nothing more pathetic looking than watching your children trying to sled on snow that doesn’t even cover the grass…
STOP IT! My movie/reading lists are long enough. Your wonderful commenters are NOT helping! : )
Book: I’m in the midst of Red Leather Diary, so that first. If I finished it, there’s something else on my night stand but I’ll be honest…I’ve forgotten what it is.
Movie: Looper. If it were here. But my kids are milking me for another viewing of Attack of the Clones so I haven’t been able to send it back to Netflix to get my queue moving. So instead, I’d work on the plethora of items on my DVR or another episode of Once Upon A Time via Netflix streaming.
Snacks: popcorn always. Fresh-out-of-the-oven choclate chip cookies. If it’s a good wet heavy snow, snow cream. Chips and guac for the salty side. Or full on nachos…
Enjoy your snow day and send some our way please!
LOVE Call the Midwife! got it tivo’d !
I wish I could stay home in my jammies and watch Star Wars!
I enjoyed Gone Girl – I read it in almost one sitting, it was so absorbing. And yes, what jen alluisi said! Some real twists.
Stocked up with goodies from Trader Joe’s, plenty of books to read (Gone Girl is awesome) and will be browsing the On Demand menu of movies. C’mon snow!
Respecting the Star Wars option. I think we’d kick it old school Disney maybe with The Apple Dumpling Gang and then introduce Mel Brooks. I believe the boys are of age now.
We had snow today too, and the kids were home (PD day though, nothing to do with the snow) but instead of jammies and movies we drove an hour into the city to buy tile for the hearth of the new fireplace (brushed latte travertine, squeee!!!) andi took them out for lunch. I had the benefit of Canadian snow plow drivers and Betty (my new Subaru) has all wheel drive
The movie is hardest to pick: do I want an old favorite, such as Notting Hill or You’ve Got Mail (such a sweet, sweet movie), or do I want to watch something new on On Demand? I would probably scroll through the On Demand choices then go for a DVD.
The book: I am in the middle of A Clash of Kings, the sequel to A Game of Thrones. I love these characters – all of them, even the baddies! This author sure knows how to drag out a story but in a very entertaining, engrossing way. Each chapter focuses on one character’s journey and there are enough characters that I eventually find myself missing a character who hasn’t been featured in a while.
The tasty snack: I crave peach cobbler but since peaches are out of season, I’d go for a brownie sundae made with mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Man, now I want a snow day!
I’m feeling envious. We get snow and ice but no snow days.
First I have to work on the holiday and now I get to hear about lovely snow days – I am living the wrong life. Loved Gone Girl and have had Moorise Kingdon waiting to be watched for a couple of weeks. As for snacks – popcorn of course!
My kids were off today, but not because of snow. End of term. The three of us watched ‘Parenthood’ (the movie), made lots of popcorn. We also took shovel breaks and Skipbo breaks, and a lovely day was had by all!
Gone Girl will be perfect. That’s a sit down and read it straight through if you have the time kind of book.
