After the storm

A rainbow shines over Brooklyn, N.Y. this morning. (Yahoo Images)

Hello from Jenworld, where the wind continues to blow, but things are fine overall. With any luck, the worst has passed us.

We got lots of wind and some rain. Just 15 miles to the west, the mountains got some snow too. Snow is not something one usually associates with hurricanes or tropical storms, but this is no usual storm, now is it?

As Frankenstorm Sandy continues to wend her way up the eastern seaboard and starts to ruffle feathers in Canada, things are calming down a bit here in Virginia. To the north of us, it’s messy, very messy. It looks like New Jersey and New York will be cleaning up for weeks.

For those of you who were impacted by the storm, would you please check in and let us all know that you’re okay? Thank you.

I’m so happy to hear that all is good with you. We never lost power, thankfully, since that means losing water as well. About half of our town lost power, but they’ve done a much better job responding quickly vs. last year’s mess with Irene.

  2. Glad you weathered the storm well.
I haven’t checked in on facebook yet, but last night one friend there reported she had gotten 5 inches of water in 24 hours — and it wasn’t over yet. Most people I knew in Loudoun County were out of power and thankful for their smartphones!

Everything is OK here in NoVA. Some streets are closed because of trees and wires down. We lost electricity for about 12 hours, but we’re doing fine.

  4. Glad to hear you’re okay! I’ve been wondering about so many East Coast friends since yesterday…

We’re fine outside of Philly. Didn’t lose power, thank goodness. Lots around us are without power and we hope the kids can go back to school tomorrow, but I’m not counting on it.

We’re fine. It was all a bit anticlimactic this far north. We had some decent winds and minor lashings of rain, but that’s it. Thunderstorms have been rolling through today, interspersed with sunshine.

I checked in with my sister in Stafford this morning – they are fine, she said they didn’t get hit hard at all. Now Sandy is probably irritating my youngest sister in Chicago.

Glad to hear and your readers are doing well! Enjoy the time with a good book (duh, you’re probably already on book 5).

I’m glad the worst skipped over you and yours :D

  10. So happy you’re okay.

This was son’s first big storm-he’s in Pennsylvania-finally got to wear those boots I bought him :)

Totally safe and sound this side of the mountain. It’s actually just a tiny little bit of a letdown. I was sort of hoping the winds would carry away the campaign signs my gun-toting, hound-dog-owning neighbor has in his front yard…

Power is back on in my part of NJ, so yay for that. I don’t even feel guilty for turning the heat on before mid-November.

Downside to the power being back: I can now see all of the photos of the Jersey shore and… wow. Nothing looks right.

Meanwhile, a good friend of mine is still toughing it out at his house up in Hoboken, despite not having power, heat, etc. At least the water has receded from his part of town.

I’m waiting to hear back from friends who live along the shore (Manasqaun, Waretown, Forked River, Ocean Grove, Toms River, Point Pleasant) and crossing my fingers that their homes were spared.
