Do you have a favorite food or food pairing? I think everyone does.
Mine is unexpected, especially if you know of my love of other foods, like grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade mac & cheese, Cornish pasties, shepherd’s/cottage pie, and my Death Row meal.
I adore cheese and grapes. Just cheese and grapes. Nothing fancy at all. I eat this at least three times a week — if I need a quick snack or even an on-the-go lunch, this is my default. If I want comfort food, this is often where I turn. The key is to eat them simultaneously. I’m sure a food scientist could tell me why a sharp cheddar and a sweet grape taste so good together in my mouth, but I don’t need science or logic to back my tastebuds.
No exaggeration, if you were to present me with a plate of grapes and pieces of cheese, I would not be able to resist. If you were to invite me to your house and you served your guests cheese and grapes, I would have to force myself to step away from the platter and not eat it all myself. I am not lying when I tell you that I would choose cheese and grapes over even chocolate.
What about you? What’s your favorite food?

Mmmmm…favorite food or food pairing? Favorite food would be enchiladas (any will do) covered in verde sauce. Fav hold hands & skip down the street food pairing though? Brie and granny smith apples. The angels sing when those two come together.
Mummm, dried figs and cream cheese. Odd, yes (ok, but maybe not unexpected since half of the combo is in my blog name) but my favorite since I was a kid.
A really good, really sharp cheddar is one of the world’s best flavors. My favorite combo is sharp cheddar**, a Honeycrisp apple, and a slice or two of fresh French bread from my grocery store. Delish.
Favorite food ever? Pretty much any frosted cake, as long as there are no nuts present. Nuts do not belong in cake.
Favorite food right now? A Brownie Under, commonly known as a brownie sundae: thick, warm square of chewy brownie under a scoop of ice cream (mint chip or coffee preferred), and a generous drizzle of hot fudge or chocolate syrup. Yum.
**I am madly in love with the 8-year-aged cheddar I get from the Wisconsin cheese man at my local farmer’s market. It’s spendy but he drives his food truck dealio from central WI to southeastern NE every single weekend to sell it to me so I have to keep up my end of the bargain. And he sounds like my uncles and cousins, which is awesome.
It’s like Nonalcoholic wine and cheese;) I never met a cheese I wouldn’t eat. Yum. But I prefer my cheese with apples.
“Apple pie without some cheese
Is like a kiss without a squeeze”.
My grandma always repeated that little rhyme when she served slices of cheddar with her [perfect] apple pie. As a picky kid I thought that was just plain crazy, but turns out that apples (or pears, or grapes) paired with cheese is almost a universal favorite.
One more time that Grandma was always way smarter than we gave her credit for!
Pears and baked brie. Simply amazing.
I discovered this combo during a lush warm summer afternoon, when my son said he would join me in the screen porch room for a last get together (before his fiance moved out here from Illinois). I knew I would feel the bittersweet in the air, so I decided to add a glass of champagne & St. Germain cocktail to my part of this lazy afternoon respite. My favorite is the red grape, the herb flecked goat cheese, and the champagne cocktail…it is magical. My son was surprised at the goat cheese/red grape surprise as he bit into his first one, but soon said he thought it was fantastic as well!
Chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup…oh wait that’s chocolate and chocolate… not two different things, really…?
There is a restaurant here called Basta that is just incredible. My favorite thing in the world is their seafood casino. I’ve looked up recipes for it but nothing is close to what they have. It is to die for good. I think I’m going to have to get take out next week!
Cream cheese topped with raspberry-chipotle sauce and Triscuits. My older son and I are mad for this combo.
Coffee and chocolate.
Well damn. I just ate lunch…but now I’m hungry again. : )
Chocolate and peanutbutter. The classic combo. Homemade chocolate chip cookies and lemonade. Popcorn and m&m’s. I am definitely a salty-sweet combo person.
