Last day

The girls in Sydney. Three weeks of total togetherness and they never once fought or bickered or failed to get along.

Today is the last day of the girls’ summer break. Ten weeks gone — poof — just like that.

We had open house at school yesterday and met all the teachers. I think it’s going to be a great year.

Today, we have to buy more school supplies, pop by the orthodontist, go to the grocery store, get back-to-school haircuts, and prepare the girls’ backpacks.

Somewhere along the way, we need to just get over this jet lag and get our heads in the game.

This is the first time ever that I’m not fully on my game and ready to own the start of the school year. I’m working hard at it, but sometimes, these things can’t be forced.

By the way, in sorting through three weeks’ worth of mail, I realized that I had a metric ton of catalogs to peruse. Based on those, fall is on its way. Oh, and apparently Halloween is just around the corner. That means Thanksgiving and Christmas are next.

Before that, Ellie’s and Pete’s birthdays are in two weeks and Grace’s is two weeks after that. I should probably finish shopping for them, don’t you think?

I also have two races in the next three weeks, but I’m not thinking about those yet.

I’m going to go for a walk now and see if I can find the real Jen.

See you tomorrow.

I guess this means you’re well and truly home.

  2. I can’t figure out how the first of September turns into December 31 in the blink of an eye, but it certainly does around here. Birthday, Halloween, Birthday, Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGH.

I love January – boring, eventless, slow January.

As frustrating as I’m sure it is to not be quite ready for school, I’m guessing it’ll be worth all those memories in the longer run. I’m having trouble being ready for school and we didn’t even go anywhere! One of the things I find really hard is that we have to start teaching before Emma starts school. So today we did the college shuffle: I left for campus at 8:30 this morning, Rob left at 9:30, taking Emma with him. She stayed in his office while we were both teaching, and I picked her up from there when I was done, around noon to get her some lunch. Luckily, tomorrow I get to drop her off at school and focus on my job until 3 p.m. :-)

Given all those birthdays etc., it sounds like it’s time to make some lists!

I am so not at the point where I am owning the start of school. I did walk to CVS on my lunch break today and bought a bare-bones collection of school supplies. I did not make it to the open house. If they’re going to schedule something to start at 5:00pm, then they can’t expect working parents to show up. One of Seamus’ friend’s mothers took Seamus and another boy to the open house, along with her child. It never ceases to amaze me how our school system is blind to the fact that many parents work during the day.

  5. I prefer to stick my head in the sand like an ostrich (yes, I know that is not really accurate, but old wives’ tales don’t fade easily) and ignore the fact that the first day of school is coming soon. I’d rather take another camping trip to the beach!
However, you did just remind me that there are two birthdays in my immediate family coming up very soon. I suppose I’d better get thinking and shopping!

Good luck to your girls and to you, too! Now go own that first day of school!

What!!!? Our kids (in Oregon) don’t go back until after Labor Day…

  7. We were always day after Labor Day until college started. Now it’s as though summer is stolen away at the last minute.

I’m a day late, so: happy 1st day of school! May it all go as smooth as silk.

  9. Moved the youngest into her college apartment and took a trip to the grocery store and Target, gave her money for clothes. Expensive but DONE. She starts next week. I ran onto the parents with lists at the office supply store the other day – nope, don’t miss that.
