Four

Way back in November, my friend Lori had four questions for me that she wanted answered. I started working on them, then got distracted — shiny things! – and now it’s nearly the end of January.

1)  If you could have been best friends with someone in history, who would it be and why? Audrey Hepburn. And, since this is patently fantasy, Auds (my BFF name for her) and I would have been the same height and weight, so she’d share her fabulous wardrobe with me. She would be supportive of my mostly-black wardrobe, but would always make sure that I get out the door wearing some fabulous accessories.
2)  If you could have dinner with a famous person in current times, who would it be and why? Duh. My future second husband, of course.  And do you really even need me to explain why? He loves my purple hair, he supports my blogging habit, and we’d live in London.
3)  What is your favorite book/books and why? Oooh, such a tough list to make. One of my faves is Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. It doesn’t matter how many times I read it, I am always creeped out by Mrs. Danvers.  I am also a HUGE fan of Bill Bryson’s books, particularly A Walk in the Woods.  And, I totally puffy heart Jen Lancaster’s books.
4)  What is your favorite smell and why? That’s easy: Freesia, which is my favorite flower because of its smell. It doesn’t grow here in my area and it’s not often in the floral section of the grocery store, so I don’t come across it very often. When I do, I try to buy a sprig, cost be damned. Then, I take it home and practically inhale the petals with my repeated sniffing. Freesia lotions and soaps and whatnot aren’t an option because 1) they never ever do justice to the real thing and 2) even if they did, the products usually contain parabens and other chemicals that I don’t want on my skin.
So those are my four questions. I’m not going to tag anyone, but feel free to run with this.

I love freesia too! I grew some many years ago, and while it was very pretty, it didn’t have the scent. Who knows why.

  2. I’m sorry. I went right to question two and got stuck there trying to decide what I’d wear to dinner with my the man who is my current imaginary husband.

Oooh, you look SO divine next to your #2 man. I had freesia in my wedding flowers. We’d be BFFs IRL. Plus I totally support the color black.

I love “Rebecca”, too. All I have to do is read that haunting first sentence to get goosebumps. “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…”

  5. Kris says:

I *just* read Rebecca, like, three weeks ago. It was fantastic. I can’t wait to read it again.

I’ve been reading Karen White’s …uh, series… the first is called The House on Tradd Street and the second is The Girl on Legare Street. They are both good, but not Rebecca-good. Still worth a look. Maybe. Ack will write more later Toby is freaking out gottago

  6. Gillian says:

I’m sorry, you can’t have Colin. He’s mine. MINE MINE MINE! ;)

ps. I made my parents drive me way the heck out to Jamaica Inn when I was 12 and we were in the UK. I totally get the Rebecca thing! Her books were scary awesome.

    That truly is a

    Fantastic Four!

  8. If I read Rebecca, will I have nightmares? You should read Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series. Mrs. Danvers clones are used to mop up industrial accidents. Really.

If you haven’t read Bryson’s latest, do it NOW. I think it’s his best, and I am on my fourth read-thru! At Home: A Short History of Private Life.

And you need to visit Hawaii. The freesia grows wild there, and you can smell it all the time!

  9. I knew Freesia, I was guessing a different guy, and I didn’t know the book (which is unavailable on Kindle format, I just found out).

  10. Borrowed Abode says:

I love the book Rebecca! But my fave book nowadays is Eat Pray Love. I know, I’m sooooo different from many women. That’s such an unusual book for me to love. :)
