Like an electric jolt to one’s vision

People, I saw something online the other day that I must share with you:

Can you see what that is?  It’s a kitchen island made of Legos.

Let’s zoom in for a closer look:

Wow.

According to the article that I linked above, this colorful creation was made by taking an Ikea kitchen island and attaching Legos to it.  Like, over 20,000 little plastic bricks.

Oh my holy hell, people, it’s like this was custom-made for my family.  You know, we the people who dearly love both Ikea and Lego.

Of course, I can only imagine what a trial it would be to keep this island’s surface clean.  And, of course, there’s the headache-inducing pattern that would be hard to look at first thing in the morning.  Or if one had a hangover.

But still, I can’t help but love this.

What do you think?  Thumbs up or thumbs down?

[Note to placate Pete:  Don't worry, I won't be getting out the Lego bin and my glue gun this weekend.]

  1. It amazes me that I see something and think nothing of it, and next thing I know it’s a proper, funny, post here!

  2. I love my Legos. But why?
I’m so looking forward to a nice island in my kitchen; Why would I choose Legos…..

  3. I looked at this before my coffee. My eyes are bleeding.

    How about a coffee table?

  4. I like it! It’s whimsical and fun and youthful.
If you were going to attempt this, I would guess that you would want to use some sort of sealer on it, so that gunk wouldn’t get in the cracks.

  5. That is rather…ambitious. And colorful. And bold.

  6. I think it’s a great idea…but maybe not in my kitchen. I think it would be an amazing bedside table idea for a lego-loving kid’s room. We probably have enough legos in our home to cover the dresser, bed and desk as well! Thanks for sharing this!

  7. I like its originality, but very impractical. You couldn’t put anything hot on the surface and if you spilled anything it would get down into the cracks. Unless they sealed it with something.

  8. Since Legos usually go for about 10 cents a brick, you’re talking $2000 for that finish. So, no, I wasn’t worried that you were actually going to do this. :-)

That gives me an idea, though (think custom Imagine tile).

  9. Yeah, um, not for me thanks. I love Legos as much as the next gal, but not for my counter. You’d definitely have to have very stark surroundings to offset that mayhem of color. (Although I do enjoy how they’ve added little vignettes to catch your attention.)

Personally….I want to see more of that wall in the background in the 2nd photo.

  10. Thumbs up, but I’d like to see more of a design it it. Wait, do I see Bert from Sesame Street on the far left of the second picture?

  11. I’m totally thinking Jack could do this to our kitchen in an afternoon… although we’re a little short in the 20 thousand Lego department… not by many, but still, short.

  12. I LOVE IT!! Some sort of polyurethane coating should take care of the cleaning issue, I think.

The more I look at these pix, the happier they make me.

  13. I kind of love it! But agree that it does hurt my eyes!

But yeah, you’d have to seal it and couldn’t put anything hot on it. But I like it nonetheless!

  14. i love it. i think i could build one out of all the lego’s in the kids room.

  15. I like it. One of a kind, and what fun to blow friends minds when they first see it?!

Definitely calling for a very strong, durable, lifetime sealant, though.

  16. Thumbs up for sure! If I had an island like that in our kitchen, my son would think I was the coolest!

  17. I give it a thumbs up for being different but I don’t think I’d want it in my kitchen.

  18. My husband was one of the “original” test kids for legos – back in Denmark ;)

Bet you’d be jealous of our collection.

  19. I love it! I had the same response as a lot of people about the cleaning issue… are you nuts! you can’t put a cup of coffee on that! but then of course, you’d have to polyurethane it or something.

It’s a little busy, and the picture hurts my eyes, but you could do something where the blocks of color were larger or smaller or something… I’m not actually sure right now.

Pete, I’m thinking yard sales… occasionally you can find good deals on Lego. How about as a backsplash???

  20. You’d have to cover it in some kind of glass or clear hard plastic or something. Pretty neat, but definitely not something I’d want in my own house.
