Thirteen

It’s Friday the 13th — the third one we’ve had in 2009.

In case you’re interested, there’s a whole bunch of stuff at Wikipedia about this day.  I’ll condense it for you:

How many times a year Friday the 13th can appear, blah blah blah, the name for the fear of Friday the 13th, blah blah blah, unknown origins of the superstitions associated with Friday the 13th, blah blah blah, speculation, blah blahbity blah, rumor, innuendo, more blah blah, and then sources and footnotes.

I have a friend whose name and other identifying details will remain private (unless she chooses to out herself in the comments), but suffice it to say that once upon a time this person had some bad experiences on Friday the 13th and therefore approached this day warily.

I’ve gotten through life thus far with no major Friday the 13th instances, so I have no reason to fear this day.

What about the rest of you?  Has Friday the 13th  been good stuff, bad stuff, or non-stuff?  Tell us your tales.

  1. My husband’s birthday once fell on a Friday the 13th. I called him at work frantic over a plumbing problem (the main was frozen and I couldn’t shut it off and the hallway was flooded). He thought I was trying to get him home for a surprise party.

Surprise! It’s going to cost you $5,000. Happy Friday the 13th.

  2. Jen says:

Well the friend ain’t me, I hadn’t even noticed it was a Friday 13th and couldn’t have told you there have already been 2 this year!

  3. Michele P says:

Our wedding anniversary is October 13th, so naturally it has fallen on Friday a few times in our 19 years together. We just use it as an excuse to lift our glasses in a toast: “We own you, Friday the 13th!!” :-)

  4. nina says:

(I think you were talking about me.) After three car wrecks on three different Friday the 13ths, it took years of therapy to drive on Friday the 13th again. YEARS!! The first one was weird; the second, I thought was coincidence; and the third freaked me out beyond belief. Now I drive b/c I figure things happen in threes, so I should be safe.

Of course, my husband is flying out tonight…I don’t think there are three chances if there is a plane crash.

  5. Cat says:

Nope, no spookiness for me. I know for some it’s serious, but for me it’s a bunch of blah blah blah :)

  6. No problems for me, although when I was a kid my mother and her sister made a big deal out of it and wouldn’t leave the house all day.

  7. melissawest says:

Nah, just another day, nothing special for me.

  8. Skywalker says:

I don’t think so – just another day like melissa said. Although when I was having premature contractions yesterday, my parents threaten me within an inch of my life not to have my child today. Needless to say God and my parents are in cohoots. No major contractions today.

  9. Ree says:

Once, on Friday 12/13, I had to take my last final to graduate from University. My car wouldn’t start – and school was a 45 minute drive.

  10. bdaiss says:

Nothing but good here. In ’06 I predicted my boy would be born on Friday the 13th…also his dad’s birthday. But I was wrong and he arrived 2 days earlier.

Perhaps I shall watch 1408 in honor of the day.

  11. Violet says:

It’s a non-stuff date for me…although my BFF was born on Friday the 13th, so maybe I should count it a good-stuff day.

  12. No problems on Friday the 13th. But full moons are another story.

  13. Peggy says:

Nothing going on here. But like Brightside Susan said full moons..wicked crazy…LOL!

  14. I had my 3rd child on Friday the 13th. I wound up in ICU and almost died. I tell her it’s her lucky day. And of course, I DIDN’T die; so maybe it really is MY lucky day as well. Tho after that experience I would not purposely have a procedure on this day…

  15. If I have a bad 13th memory, I have repressed it.
    ;-)

  16. jenn says:

I decided long ago to claim immunity from Friday the 13th since my birthday is the 13th day of June (even though I technically was born on a Sunday). It’s all there in Section A, line 42, codicil B 1/2. Swear.

  17. Jaina says:

We actually might have found out reception location on Friday the 13th. In French culture, 13 is a lucky number. I’ve pretty much chosen not to believe in stuff like that.

  18. Refinnej says:

My older son was born on Friday the 13th, 11 years ago this year. Personally, I’m a fan of them.
