Kaboom

We here in Jenworld spent the 4th of July doing the same things we do every year — blowing shit up.  After all, it’s pretty much an unalienable right for red-blooded Americans to do stupid stuff with explosive materials.

This year, we went back to our old ‘hood to do it, because we felt it was best not to tip off our new neighbors quite yet as to our pyrotechnic proclivities.

Since everyone on our old street knows about our sacred 4th of July traditions, no one even batted an eyelash over the ruckus we made in 2009.

We even had help in the form of the retired widow who lives across the street from Old Jenworld.  I am not kidding.  Why not share the sparkly, explosive joy with everyone?

And now it’s Monday again and the holiday weekend is over.  Boo hiss.

How was everyone’s weekend?

Looks like fun! We didn’t do our own fireworks this Canada Day, much to Rachel’s disappointment. She has a special affinity for the burning schoolhouse, go figure.

Our weekend? It was like two different seasons in two days. Saturday was cold and blustery. We wore jackets to the Farmers’ Market and bought hot chocolate and hot apple cider to warm us up. Also, it rained.

Sunday was gorgeous – hot and sunny. The girls each invited a friend over and we went swimming. After the guests left, I loaded up the girls and we drove to Cedar Hill Berry Farm and picked a huge basket of strawberries. A few might have been consumed on the spot (Rae had juice stains all the way down her neck, lol). On the way home, we stopped in Pakenham for ice cream. All in all, a great weekend.

That does look like fun plus it was supervised: Yeah for Pete! I wouldn’t want the boy terrorist neighbors thinking you’re crazy or something.

As for me, I spent the better part of 96 hours trying to avoid a meltdown:

    Happy 4th!

it was a good weekend, with just the right amount of work and play, resting and rushing, sun and clouds.

    Looks like fun! :)

I miss the neighborhood explosives! I used to sit on our roof and watch the neighbors light stuff up from the cornfield. Not so much here in the Hills – Fireworks are illegal (due to the risk of forest fires). We usually get a good show up at Rushmore, but this year was a major major bust.

I’m thinking you should have initiated your new neighbors to the festivities. I bet there would be a few boys in awe of your pyrotechnics! : )

  6. Michele P says:

Gotta love fireworks! The boys thought I momentarily lost my sanity when I agreed to cross into NH to buy the illegal fireworks on Saturday. They were *SO* great! :-) Looks like you guys had a blast!

  7. Kristabella says:

My brother went up to Wisconsin and got a bunch of illegal-in-Illinois fireworks to light off. They were pretty cool!

How come you didn’t wait until it was dark? It’s more fun that way!

  8. Julie says:

VERY smart of you not to show your new neighbors (and those boys!) how cool you are with the blowing up shit–you so don’t want to give them any ideas, from what you’ve casually described them as like here on your blog, the less they see the wild side in y’all, the better!

For a different holiday here, we used to go to the same neighborhood that had sidewalks for our son’s trick or treating on Halloween. Both before and after neighborhoods we lived in/moved to, did not have sidewalks, and I did not want to start any new traditions (look! a car! everyone ditch over onto the dirt!) with my young sons. I’m very thankful we kept going back to the old/familiar place. Sometimes where you don’t live is better . . .

  9. Fannie says:

Too much food and many, MANY things blown up. Including a few Barbies.

  10. Fireworks are illegal here, but we’d actually gotten some in PA when we were there in April, so we had some fun. But don’t tell anyone.

  11. Ree says:

Exhausting. Next July, please someone remind me that I’m NOT 25 any longer.

You KNOW I’m all about the neighborhood love. ;-)

It’s sad to report that we watched the Macy’s NYC fireworks on tv. We thought they’d be on the East side of the city, where they usually are, but this time, the were on the West side. What a total letdown. It was a slap in the face when I heard the announcer say that this year’s was the “biggest and best”.

Ah, you have to LOVE the blasting of a patriotic holiday:)

I LOVE fireworks. Great pictures, I’m glad you had such a great time!
