I want my MTV: Journey (oh yes!)

Since I didn’t snark Duran Duran last week, I am unleashing this week by featuring “Separate Ways” by Journey.  So click on the link to watch it, then come back here to discuss.

[Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting...]

People, I have to tell you, I don’t even know where to start.  Really, there’s just so much about this video that cracks me up.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it.  It got to the point that I was watching for 10 seconds, pausing to write some notes, watching for another 10 seconds, pausing for more notes, then watching for only another 10 seconds or so.

SeparateWaysShould we talk about Steve Perry’s mullet AND sideburns?  [Some 80s so-called fashion, with some 70s throwback in there.]

Or perhaps his overly dramatic acting/emoting, complete with hand gestures and bulging tendons on his neck? [Really, does he think this is Royal Academy of Dramatic Art?]

Or how about we talk about some of the porn ‘staches being sported  by the band?  [Wow.  Again, more 70s holdovers, with some 80s thrown in for good measure.]

Or we could talk about the woman.  Did you get a good look at her outfit?  White leather pumps with a black leather mini skirt?  I think she might even be wearing nude pantyhose.  And her hair — oh my holy hell — her hair.

[And can you imagine her resume?  "Oh yeah, I was the hot babe in a Journey video.  I paced back and forth the entire time and MAN did I emote."]

And, because it’s too good to pass up, here’s the Literal Video Version.  Every time I watch this, I laugh until I need to blow my nose or have possibly soiled myself.

But here’s the most important question of all:  Journey, love ‘em or hate ‘em?  Some people love their music, others don’t.  Where do you fall on the spectrum?

OMG – loved the literal version. Even Her Majesty was laughing.

Journey are a band that are much better if you can’t see them. I like their music but I can’t recall a single video that did them any justice. Steve Perry always looked like he was being stuck with a cattle prod.

  2. Omigosh–my throat hurts from laughing so hard! That girl’s hair was all kinds of bad.

I love Journey–goofy looking bastards that they are. “Any Way You Want It” never, ever fails to bring a smile to my face.

Thanks for the good laugh, Jen : )

You, once again, made my day start with giggles and guffaws. Oh my sweet jesus the hair! And the falsettos! And the white pumps and nude stockings! It’s all too much, really. And SO great to be reminded what jackasses we all looked like in the 80′s. Thank you, thank you!

I couldn’t agree more with Mooselet–much better if you can’t see them.

  4. Skywalker says:

I could rock out without seeing men in tight jeans, bad tees and bad hair too.

How where these guys video superstars???

  5. jenn says:

I actually like Journey more now than I did back in the day. Definitely prefer audio only – that video was craptastic to the extreme!

  6. Violet says:

Like jenn, I like Journey more now than I did when they were hot. (Could be because I was a HUGE Fanilow so Journey wasn’t really my genre but we’re not talking about that.) I was struck by how tight Steve’s jeans were, which showcased the tube sock in his pants.

  7. Oh, I love the literal version. Never was much of a Journey fan.

  8. bdaiss says:

I always thought Steve Perry was hot. Of course I was also obsessed with Frank Sinatra (uh…not sure why I made that past tense…).

Those Literal Videos are the best.thing.evar. : )

I liked Journey more before I saw them. In real life they’re just too skinny and too hairy. That video? Too funny.

  10. The only thing playing in my house during the 80′s was Sesame Street, Raffi, and Sharon,Lois and Bram.

When Sorority Girl got her first cell phone, she had Don’t Stop Believin’ as her ringtone. I guess I’ve heard the beginning of that song about 12,000 times in my life.

  11. Diane says:

Have to fall in the Love ‘Em bandwagon. This band was popular in my late teens/early 20s era and roadtripping to see them as part of day-long concerts at the Superdome in New Orleans was just plain fun! Back then I could handle the high drama – my musical tastes have greatly changed. Still, even though I don’t listen to them (and really would rather not) the nostalgia factor is sky high.

  12. One thing I remember hearing about Journey in the 80′s was that Perry couldn’t lip synch during video filming; he wore himself out actually singing in take after take.
And they say women are drama queens!

  13. I so needed that laugh.

I think Perry has serious creepo factor — but I do like a couple of Journey songs. NOT “Open Arms”, though (reminds me of an 8th grade dance), and every time I hear “Don’t Stop Believing”, I think I’ve been transported to a roller rink somewhere.

  14. Ree says:

That literal version was hilarious. I’m not a fan, although Journey was the very first band I ever saw in concert.

  15. Jaina says:

I can’t watch the video at the moment, but I LOVE me some Journey.

  16. Fannie says:

Um, can we talk about Steve Perry’s JEANS? OMG!
