Cravings

Before I start this post, let me just shout out loud and clear that I am NOT pregnant, regardless of what you might think when you read this.  That shop has been pharmaceutically shut down and won’t be reopening EVER.

*ahem*

Anyway…

neccoDo you ever get a hankering for some food and you JUST HAVE TO HAVE IT?  You know, like Pad Thai or egg salad sandwiches or Necco Wafers?  Come on, I know it’s not just me.

When I was pregnant with Graceful, I was amazingly open to suggestions about food.  I could (and did) read about, say, Beanie Weenies and then I just HAD TO HAVE IT.  It didn’t matter that Beanie Weenies were foul and disgusting and not something I would have ordinarily let pass my lips, because by god I was going to have some.  Of course, all it took was two bites and then I was DONE.  Over it.  Never again.

180px-fruitstripegumI also went through this with southern fried chicken (even though I hadn’t eaten chicken in years), cherry juice from Whole Foods (drank GALLONS of the stuff, I tell you), and Fruit Stripe Gum.  With the gum, I would furiously chew a piece for a few minutes until the initial burst of frooty flavor was gone, spit it out, and start a new piece.  I went through about three packs a day for about a month.

I discovered Starbucks Frappuccinos TWO DAYS BEFORE I found out I was pregnant with Graceful and then had to wait another nine months before I could have them again.  Surprisingly, it took me another five years before my addiction for the bottled version (a.k.a. Mommy Mochas) took root, but taken root it has and it’s not going anywhere.

frap_darkI drink the Mocha flavor, but I prefer the Dark Chocolate Mocha version, which is not carried in my town.  It was available briefly but now I can’t find it.  Bummer.  If I ever find a new dealer source, I am SO going to stock up.  Hey, I have a huge pantry.  I could buy 25 4-packs and be caffeinated for weeks.

[Notes to anyone I might be seeing in the near future, such as my mother:  1) If you find these, please let me know and I'll pay you to stock up for me.  Please, pretty please.  2) On the other hand, my birthday IS coming up and you're probably already wondering what would be an appropriate gift for me.  Now you know.]

cherrymmBut, the worst food craving I’ve had in a long time is Cherry M&Ms.  Oh my holy hell.  The addiction, I almost cannot speak of it.

And, of course, these were available for a limited time only and now that time has passed.  Grrr…

Lately, however, I’ve been wanting them.  No, I’ve been NEEDING them.

I finally got smart and went to eBay to see if someone else was smarter than me and stocked up.  Woot!  Someone had.  Three clicks later, I had agreed to purchase TEN bags of the stuff.  And not the lame-o little snack bags either.  I’m talking about the BIG BAGS.

[Note to Pete:  I believe I neglected to mention this to you, didn't I?  Sorry.]

When my box of fake cherry-chocolatey goodness finally arrives, I’m going to stash all of the bags here:

fridgecabinet2

Do you see that?  That cabinet is only accessible to me if I pull out the tall step ladder.    I’m hopeful that by putting them well out of my reach, I won’t actually pour them all into my bathtub and then dive in face first and swim around in them. My goal is to make the fake cherry-chocolatey goodness last for ten months — one bag per month.

Stop laughing, I can too do it.

Only if Pete hides the step ladder AND puts a padlock on the cabinet.

  1. I don’t think the Cherry M&Ms hit Canada, but I hope that you enjoy each and every one.

When I was pregnant with the Princess the only thing I could drink was Coke. And I don’t drink Coke. And I couldn’t stand the sight or smell of eggs.

When I was pregnant with Bad I had to have an egg salad sandwich from Tim Horton’s for lunch every day for months.

Oh to live in a world without cravings….right now I’m hankering after some Cadbury’s mini-eggs….mmmmm

    I don’t think I’ve seen cherry M&M’s, and I am a candy connoisseur!
yesterday I was sure i would perish if I didn’t have chicken shwarma. Luckily, we’ll never know.
This fall I was addicted to caramel apple candy corn and bought a dozen bags. Good stuff.

  3. The Hen says:

Shame – a Cherry M & M ball pond would have made such a good blog image!

When preggers with No 2 I had a thing for pork pies….which was utterly disgusting…thankfully it didn’t last long.

I do get the occasional pang for a bit of choccy…and am fond of a bar of Suchard !

But really my undoing is savory nibbles…Kettle chips and honey roasted cashew nuts!

Badness, you hit upon my worst weakness/craving food ever, Cadbury mini-eggs. When I was pregnant with Smiles, I had to have them within reach at ALL times. I can’t look at them now without smiling (then scarfing them down!).

Jen, let me know how that Cherry M&M rationing thing goes…I’d give myself a gold star if I could get through one month without gobbling them all! :-)

  5. alison says:

Umm, good luck with that rationing thing. Unfortunately, I don’t have any cupboards high enough to hide things from myself. But, as Oscar Wilde once said (I’m such a name dropper today, well at least that’s what Stephen Harper told me), the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.

  6. Mizmell says:

Cravings are hell. You may as well give in, eat them up and get them out of the house. If it were me, I’d go insane just knowing they were there.

    (Ice cream is my weakness…)

  7. It’s been so long (13 years) since I was pregnant, I don’t remember any cravings.

But now — See’s Candy Pumpkin Truffles…only available in the fall. I have one box stashed away for emergencies…but what if it gets stale…maybe I should break into it soon.

  8. bdaiss says:

Cherry M&M’s? Never heard of ‘em…but I could see myself getting addicted – fast!

My weakness is Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. If I could afford it I’d buy 52 boxes. One for each week of the year. : )

  9. nfmgirl says:

    hee hee

I love the image of you diving face first into a tub of M&Ms!

I love me some Necco wafers! I have never been pregnant, but I still get some fierce cravings. Sometimes I crave “fruity” (this may result in a Skittles or Starburst purchase), sometimes “salty” (any variation of chips or french fries), “chocolate” (this can be anything chocolate), “sweet” (even a soda will satisfy this craving, because I usually only drink water or iced tea), or “creamy” (cheesecake, things made with whipped cream, frozen yogurt, etc.)

I know what you mean about the “beanie weanies”. I remember craving a chili dog SO bad. I didn’t even remember ever having had one before, but it sounded SO good. I finally got one, took one bite and thought, “Ugh! How can something that sounds so good taste so bad?”

  10. alex says:

I’ve never heard of cherry M&M’s! But they sound wonderful!

When I was pregnant with my son, I had to have corn on the cob every night with dinner no matter what we had. And I had to have PB & J for lunch. If I didn’t, I’d get sick (of course, I got sick if I laughed too hard). I also craved M&M’s around 2 p.m. and Steak & Shake Milkshakes around 9 p.m.

Now I love Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce. I put it on just about everything. Mmmm….

  11. Kristabella says:

My dad used to tell us that you could throw Necco Wafers into the toll machines in Illinois because they are the same size as quarters.

I never tried it, but I’m guessing he was right.

  12. When I was pregnant the first time, I craved oranges. I have sensitive skin and peeling them irritates my fingers, so this was always echoing through our house: “Honey! Peel me an orange! Please?” (batting eyelashes)
I also ate a lot of cottage cheese.

When I was pregnant the second time, it was pretzels and other snack stuff. Since my first was a girl, and the cravings were so opposite, I thought the second was a boy. But she’s not!

My current addiction is Trader Joe’s Kettle Corn. Salty AND sweet!

  13. melissawest says:

Holy cravings, batgirl! I’m having similar issues with GS cookies.

  14. Kirstin says:

Laughed all the way through this post!!!! I could picture everything you were writing! When I was pregnant, I just couldn’t get enough of lemons.

Now though, I tend to crave something salty, like popcorn. Just had some Ike & Sam’s last night and now I think there may be repeats.

  15. tobymine says:

Oh my gosh, CREEPY. Last week I found out that my favoritest cookie makers went out of business and so I can’t get my delicious Mother’s English Tea cookies anymore. So I went on eBay and ordered a package. WE ARE BRILLIANT AT THE SAME TIME!!

  16. Lacey Bean says:

My fiance is obsessed with the Haribo gummies, especially the cherry ones. He will buy 5 pound bags from Amazon.com.

And my mom is obsessed with Cadbury creme eggs. When the Easter candy hits the stores, she stockpiles them so they will last her until next Easter. I was home yesterday, and she probably has about 20 of them already.

  17. There is an upside: You will have great calves climbing up and down that step ladder for ten months.
    ;-)

  18. Love Necco wafers and Fruit Stripe gum, and I did EXACTLY what you did with it.

The Fraps, I can only have the ones they make at Starbucks, in the blender with the ice. I looked at the (new?) dark chocolate ones at Target today but realized I’d given our blender away, and the drive through is easier.

When I was preggers, I craved McDonald’s hamburgers (how foul, and I never ate fast food before then!) and Red Baron pepperoni pizzas.

  19. mrs. g. says:

Holy hell. There are cherry m&ms? Really?

I am currently revisiting Nilla Wafers.

  20. raino says:

when i was pregnant for my twins i often craved egg rolls and lemon pie. never tried nilla wafers.

  21. Ree says:

Necco Wafers. YUM. Those sugary, shake-inducing yumalicious goodies.

…wha? Did you say something else?

  22. Mimi says:

I agree. I found some in our local discount store. I bought two packages. I was very glad when they sold out of ‘em. They’re just too swell.

  23. Cherry M&Ms must be a regional thing – thank goodness!

Currently I am avoiding the candy aisles until the Easter candy is gone because I know I do not have your will power.

  24. I thought I’d be okay reading this post *and* the comments because I don’t care for Neccos (but would eat them in a pinch : ) and cherry M&Ms don’t sound all that appealing to me either.

But then somebody mentioned thin mints . . .

Drat. I must find *something* to end this craving!

  25. jennystar98 says:

CHERRY M&M’s???? I’ve missed a lot in the good ol’ US of A in the passed 2 3/4 years.

I feel you though. I’m 100% addicted to chocolate of any kind (except white). I decided to give it up for lent to try and break my addicton. Not sure if this was a good idea.

Are you going to ration them or eat them when you feel like it and enjoy them? I say the latter :)

  26. momofTNT says:

Love, Love, LOVE Cherry M&M’s!!! Also love the cadbury mini eggs. Cravings while pregnant (w/both boys) Taco Bell and Grapefruits. Weird. Lately it has been salt & pepper kettle chips with a frosty glass of diet root beer. Those chips are extremely addictive. Also love swedish fish and good and plenty’s.

Can’t wait to see how you do with the rationing. Good Luck to You!

  27. Skywalker says:

You are insane! Diving into a tub full of cherry M&Ms.

    Hahahaha

  28. Poppy Buxom says:

Thank God I never heard about Cherry M&Ms. A friend of mine brought me these orgasmically good (seriously, don’t even try to operate heavy machinery while eating these puppies) chocolate-covered dried cherries from California, and I wolfed down the entire bag in one day.

I can’t even imagine what I’d do with a bathtub full of M&Ms!
