When Graceful isn’t emulating Nancy Drew, she’s busy being like Harriet the Spy. She has seen the movie many times and has read the book several times, including twice this week.
In case you aren’t familiar with Harriet the Spy, she is an 11 year old girl who watches everything around her and records her findings in her notebook. Like Nancy Drew, Harriet has spy gear and her supplies always include binoculars.
Yesterday, before we left for Graceful’s dental appointment, she called down from her room:
“Mommy! What is [name of neighbor]‘s last name?”
I answered her question.
Graceful, “How do you spell that?”
[Short pause, while I ponder what it is she's doing.]
Me, “Graceful, stop spying on the neighbors.”
Graceful (softly) “Darn it.”
oh, i like that graceful. to be 11 again…
also, i just wrote a post inspired by your post….
I think there was an entire year of my childhood when I was Harriet the Spy. I love your girl’s style.
I loved Harriet the Spy. I must get the book for Leah. Thanks for reminding me. I hope Graceful is feeling better today.
I loved reading Harriet the Spy and Nancy Drew.
Good luck luck sleuthing, Graceful.
Graceful is actually doing your neighborhood a service – they should be thankful, as long as they aren’t doing something they shouldn’t!
I actually just reread the book and watched the movie a few months ago… I swear I am an adult.
And I carried around a Harriet the Spy notebook for a good while after reading the book. SO wanted to be her. Minus the getting ink dumped all over me part.
I just fell in love with her a little more. I wanted to be Harriet too.
Sounds like I have some reading to do!
Killjoy!
1. My daughter went through a Harriet the Spy period, too. It was awesome.
2. Glad to see Elegant feeling better!
3. Recent surgery + Spying = Rear Window!
he-he-he! Seriously, she’s such a cutie.
I remember Harriet. Loved the names … Pinkie Whitehead … I wanted friends like that.
Isn’t it amazing how all they have to do is ask a simple question and we can instantly read their little minds?? Very cute.
Glad to be back in the blogging world and back to reading your blog. I’ve missed it!
Too funny!
Oh man–it was one of those “eyes in the back of mom’s head” moments : )
I was a Little House girl, myself. Great story.
Haha, too cute. I remember going through my Harriet the Spy phase…I think most kids get there at some point after reading that book.
