Okay, can someone please explain Technorati to me? Please, pretty please?
I’ve looked at the Technorati site and I still don’t know what it’s all about. I even consulted Wikipedia, which was of no help at all.
So, could someone please help a clueless blogger out?
Thanks!
I don’t know either – hopefully someone can explain.
i’m totally coming back to see if anyone knows. can we add some “can someone please explain” topics? because i have some too.
Clueless here too.
All I know is that if you sign up you can tell if someone has linked your blog. I discovered this two weeks back–it’s a great way to say hi to someone who has mentioned your blog. Other than that, not sure.
I can help. Technorati is a search and monitoring tool for the blogosphere. It also functions as a social bookmarking site where users can flag their favorite blogs and bloggers can tag posts so that Technorati users can find posts and blogs by topic easily.
When you add tags to a blog post, this enables Technorati (and other search tools) to index the content for searchability. An example: at BlogHer, we were asked to tag our content with BlogHer 07 — that way, people searching for the related content would locate all the relevant posts.
As a monitoring tool, you can SUBSCRIBE to the RSS feed of a specific search. I recommend the “ego search” for clients and bloggers — a search for your first and last name, with the RSS feed plugged into your reader. That way, you’ll know if someone’s writing about you online. Of course, this only works if you have an unusual name, Jennifer.
I also recommend setting up keyword monitoring for company names for corporate clients. If you’re a big fan of a certain actor, band or are looking for information on other people who share a very specific health condition, for example, a tool like Technorati can help you find that content (posts) or blogs that focus on that topic.
You’re welcome.
I forgot to add that as Technorati indexes blogs, it ranks them. The lower your rank number, the higher you are — e.g. Dooce is number 29 in the Top 100. The second designation is your authority — this is the number of sites that have linked to yours. Again, using Dooce, her Authority is 4,996. That’s good.
Jen, your Authority is 70 and your Rank is 85,748.
What this tells me (when I’m wearing my corporate hat) is how much reach the blog has when the blogger publishes content related to my client.

And from *my* understanding, “Authority” is how many blogs have inked to your site in the last 6 months. (And even if they link multiple times, it still only counts once)
And “Rank” is your magic popularity number. So, like, I’m the 168,143rd most popular blog. Which kinda really sucks.
Why don’t you people like me? pbbhhht.
My head just exploded.
