Soccer Girl wakes up at 7:15. She’s tired from staying up too late the night before, but she’s also excited. Her first-ever soccer game is today!
First things first: A healthy breakfast to give her the energy she needs. Orange juice, banana, yogurt, and a multi-grain waffle with a little butter and syrup. (Yes, Soccer Girl’s mother replenished the supplies yesterday.)
Then it’s time to get ready: Red jersey, black shorts, red socks, shin guards, and cleats. Soccer Girl’s golden locks are pulled back in a jaunty pony tail.
Soccer Girl and her mother leave the house at 8:10 to pick up a fellow player on the way to the field. Soccer Girl’s father and sister stay home for this game. They are not morning people and this is too early to ask them to cheer at a game.
Soccer Girl arrives at the field at 8:40 and begins to warm up. Stretches, sprints, and other exercises.
The game begins promptly at 10:00. The players are appropriately respectful of the referee, even though the soccer parents couldn’t help but notice that he was all of 14 years old and his voice hasn’t changed yet. Also, he seemed blind to fouls committed against our players, but that’s not relevant here.
What is relevant is that Soccer Girl and her team played their hearts out. Soccer Girl may not be the best on the team, but what matters is that she did her best:
